New Britain wins Southington land valuation suit, gets credits for overpayment

A contested land valuation court case decided against Southington will result in a loss of local tax revenue for upcoming fiscal years. New Britain's Board of Water Commissioners contested Southington's valuation of more than 1,200 acres of land the New Britain Water Department owns in Southington and on which it pays taxes.

Stovall appointed chief appraiser for Quitman County

Stovall, an Albany, Ga., native, has worked in the Assessors' Office as its office manager since February of 2019. In 2004, she earned an associate degree from Wallace Community College in Eufaula with a major in Finance. She has lived in the Quitman County area for over 24 years and currently resides in Fort Gaines. Stovall can be reached in the Assessors' Office in the Quitman County Courthouse.


Officials remain tight-lipped about missed deadlines that forced Habersham to refund nearly $334K in taxes

The Habersham County Board of Tax Assessors is not commenting on news Now Habersham broke Thursday about an apparent scheduling error that forced the county to refund nearly $334,000 in taxes. Deputy chief appraiser Amy Garmon says her office is gathering more information about what led up to the county's failure to schedule eight appeal hearings that resulted in the tax forfeiture.

Tarrant Appraisal District board adds oversight to employee-filed complaints

Tarrant Appraisal District employees will be required to obtain approval from the chief appraiser before submitting complaints to regulatory agencies, according to a new policy the board of directors approved at its Dec. 9 meeting. The policy is intended to add more oversight to complaints filed by appraisal district employees to agencies like the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.


WASHINGTON

Mauck wins Island County assessor recount by 12 votes

Republican Kelly Todd Mauck has officially won the race for Island County assessor after the elections office announced the recount. With the latest count, Mauck won with 12 more votes than Theodore James Kubisiak (19,993 to 19,981). The candidates were originally just 11 votes apart, with Republican Mauck leading with 19,990 votes Kubisiak's 19,979. Kubisiak does not identify with a party.


WEST VIRGINIA

Incomplete computer work causing havoc for Marshall County Assessor, staff

A long-standing issue with the state has been brewing in the Marshall County Assessor's Office, and officials want something done about it. The state tax office implemented a new computer system in May called ias World. The problem is that not all of the software has been fully completed in the county offices creating havoc for the assessors.


WISCONSIN

Wisconsin Taxpayers Must Pay Property Taxes Before Filing a Refund Claim

In November 2022, the Supreme Court of Wisconsin clarified the procedural requirements for taxpayers to challenge their property taxes. Although several taxpayers historically filed protective refund claims upon receipt of their December property tax bill and then pay those taxes by the statutory deadline of January 31, the Court held that a taxpayer must first pay the challenged tax before filing the refund claim.
