Property taxes have risen across much of the country in recent years. In the most recent data available, the median tax bill increased more than 8% to $2,795 per homeowner in 2021 compared with 2019, said David Logan, senior economist at the National Association of Home Builders.


Push for constitutional amendment to change increases in homestead assessments

A Miami legislator has proposed a constitutional amendment that would change how much a property's assessed value can go up each year. The amendment would cap the allowable increase in the assessment of a homestead property to 2%, down from the current 3%.

The developer of New Jersey's American Dream mall this week missed a roughly $9M debt service payment after missing several last year. The Canadian developer of the complex, Triple Five, failed to meet the semiannual payment on the East Rutherford, New Jersey, property, CoStar reports. The $8.8M payment is for interest due on about $290M in municipal bonds.

Dallas Central Appraisal District Pays $170,000 in Cyber Attack
On Election Day 2022, Dallas County, Texas, Chief Appraiser Ken Nolan and his staff showed up for work, but there was an unexpected problem. Nothing worked. The Dallas Central Appraisal District's desktop computers, all 300 of them, were frozen. Emails didn't go through either. The website disappeared.
