SF's Westin St. Hotel Overvalued by Tax Assessor, Court Says

The Westin St. Francis hotel in San Francisco was overvalued by tax officials during its 2015 sale, according to a state appeals court ruling. The court ordered the city to refund a portion of the property taxes paid by the new owners, BRE Diamond Hotel (a Blackstone subsidiary), but did not specify how much, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Lee Abernethy had no idea getting married would cause his Berkeley County property tax bill to soar by more than $4,000. That didn't happen the two previous times Abernethy, 84, got married. The difference this time is that he married a woman who's not a U.S. citizen, and South Carolina has a little-known rule about that when it comes to property taxes.
